Curly Girl Method on Transitioning Hair

Hair in the red box is my new growth

I have decided to do the Curly Girl Method on my transitioning hair. The Curly Girl Method is based on the book called Curly Girl: The Handbook, written by Lorraine Massey.  It requires hair maintenance to be done without the use of shampoos, silicones, and styling tools.  While doing my research for this method, I had a hard time finding transitioners doing this method.  I decided to do it myself because I want take advantage of the moisturizing factor that this method addresses.

So...

I will be making a couple of changes to my hair regimen:

I will still be...
  • doing protective styles like twists, braids, and cornrows
  • doing twist outs, bantu knot outs, twist and curl,  and braid outs
  • using the following oils: Coconut oil, Castor Oil, and Jojoba Oil
New changes...
  • Pre-poo with VO5 Conditioner and Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Co-wash with Tresemme Natural Conditioner and other CG friendly conditioners
  • need to find a CG friendly leave-in conditioner, but in the meantime, I will be using Tresemme Natural Conditioner. This will replace my Cantu Shea Butter Leave In
  • Use Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque or Purification Mask as my deep treatment
  • For moisturizing, use Shea Moisture Curl Enhanced Smoothie.
  • Use Eco Styler Gel as my styling gel
Since this is a learning process, I will update you on how it is going.

Any transitioners doing the Curly Girl Method?  Advice please....

  1. I always wondered about the CG method; never thought it was applicable to transitioning hair though! What do you do with your relaxed ends? Kudos for trying it!
As an avid protective styler now, and throughout the duration of my transition, I can attest to the fact that it helps retain moisture and length!

    1. You know, although I am going to do the CG method while transitioning, I still will be doing protective styling most of the time. I know a lot of fully naturals do WnG with the CG method, but I do know that even with that method you can still do protective styling. My main goal is for the moisture benefits because sometimes I hair tends to lack moisture if I do not spritz it regularly. Well, I am excited about this... and will definitely let you know how it is going.

  3. I was interested in doing the Tightly Curly method, but read that the Tightly Curly techniques won't work until you grow out the chemicals. So, I haven't tried it. I'll be interested to see how using the CG method works for you while you transition. Good luck!

    1. Thanks, Erika. One thing I have learnt so far... well.. it's been just a day.. is to be VERY patient. Make sure you keep checking back to see my progress, and I do hope my hair benefits from this method.
