What You Need for DIY Home Treatments

Image
I love doing DIY home treatments because it allows me to control ingredients that I put into my hair. When making these treatments, there are some essential tools that you need. Measuring tools Each recipe in my DIY home treatments has specific measurements. I never eye-ball my mixture because it can give different results. Due to this fact, I have an array of measuring tools ranging from teaspoons, tablespoons to cups to spoons. pH Strips One of the most important things you will need in your treatment is a testing strip, pH strips. These strips are used to test the pH level of your mixture. If your mixture is not in the correct range that you want, it can cause your hair cuticles to behave in different ways than you would like. Click here to learn more about pH Balance in Natural Hair Mixing Equipment Some mixtures call for more than spoons for mixing the treatment. For a more liquid consistency, I prefer to use my blender. This helps keeps the consistency th...

HairChemistry: Protein Overload

Image
Source: http://www.thenaturalhavenbloom.com/2011/08/protein-treatments-coconut-oil-and.html Yesterday on DiscoveringNatural Facebook page, we discussed Protein and Natural Hair. The topics ranged from Protein Sensitivity to Protein Treatments to Protein Overload. I have done previous posts on the first two subjects, but wanted to discuss Protein Overload. What is Protein Overload In the past, people have thought of Protein Overload as a myth, however, time and time again it has been proven that this situation actually exists. If you have been using protein in your hair without giving yourself a break with a moisture enriched non-protein treatment, and your hair feels dry and brittle, you might be experiencing Protein Overload. Why we need protein in our hair Remember, your hair needs protein, therefore there are some types of protein that will attach to the hair and create problems for people that are protein sensitive. Protein helps strengthen the hair and repair...

Hair Typing Systems

Image
What is the Hair Typing System? The hair typing system is a way of categorizing one's hair texture.  A lot of naturals use this to figure out what products will be beneficial their hair. However, note that one of head of hair can contain multiple hair types. There are two commonly known typing systems: Andre Walker’s Curl Typing System L.O.I.S. African American Natural Texture Typing System Andre Walker’s Curl Typing System This system is the most common one.  It uses a number and letter categorizing process. The numbers show the main category while the letters are subcategories. The numbers range from 1 to 4, while letters range from a to c.  Straight – Type 1, Wavy – Type 2, Curly – Type 3 and Kinky – Type 4. To read more and see pictures of the textures that fall under each category, click HERE .   L.O.I.S. African American Natural Texture Typing System This system deals with both the texture and the thickness (density) of the hair. Thi...

HairChemistry: Test My Hair's Porosity Video

Image
I decided to test the porosity of my hair so as to understand its product absorption capability. I do not have any problem with products getting absorbed into my hair cuticles, however, I have always been curious about this test. While transitioning, I do not believe I could get an accurate and non-biased test since my relaxed ends had damaged cuticles while my new growth were undamaged. Here is my 4-mins test. Enjoy!

HairChemistry: Hair Porosity

Image
As a blogger, I keep a journal of all the blog and video ideas I will like to share with you. On the top of my list is Hair Porosity . While doing my research I came upon this intelligent YouTube video by  HairCrush . She broke it down in a language that I understood and that I know you all would understand. Hope you enjoy the video. I will be testing the porosity of my hair on my next wash day. Do you know if you have high or low or normal hair porosity? How do you manage such hair?

HairChemistry: Will these products mix together?

Image
I got inspired to write this post after watching the YouTube video below. This is a test to see if two products, usually a gel and a creamy moisturizer will result in the famous whitish balls of product residue on the hair. Before doing the Curly Girl Method , I use to use Cantu Shea Butter Leave In. This always left whitish residue on my hair. Since then, I have been able to successfully mix different products with this leave in to create a non-white residue leaving Cantu Shea Butter Leave In . View the video below to learn how to test for product compatibility: Here is my test using products that I use on a regular basis. I tested with Big Sis's hair. Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Eco Styler Gel (Argan oil) Results: This produced a thick smooth, non tacky, mixture.  She did have a little whitish residue but it went away after a couple of mins. Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and ORS Twist and Lock Gel Results: The mixture was much th...

Hair Chemistry: Humidity and Your Hair

Image
When you hear Humidity... you think frizz and bad hair days. The weather has been quite humid lately, so I have tried to minimize the amount of frizz and bad hair days I will experience by just having my hair in cornrows and twists with the hope of doing a twist out on the twisted part next week. I have my fingers crossed and hope that this humidity does not cause me to have frizzy twist out. While researching this issue, I have found a couple of methods that can be used to minimize the effect of humidity on the hair. Use the right products ... that will help seal your hair and prevent moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. Products like anti-frizz serums, silicones, and bee-wax. Click here for more products . Add Protein ... ingredients such as hydrolyzed protein. Create anti-frizz hairstyles ... such as pin-up updos, braids, cornrows, and twists. Embrace the frizz ... and use it to your advantage.  Create styles like will minimize the obvious appearance of th...

The Trickery of Hair Product Ingredients

Image
Okay, so you know that Argan Oil is good for your hair.  You decide to go to the Beauty Supply Store to buy something that has Argan Oil in it.  After going up and down the aisle, you see a product, brightly labelled as containing ... Argan Oil. Your heart skips a beat. You pick it up, look at the list of ingredients, because you know that is what you need to do , and see "Argan Oil" as one of the ingredients.  You put it in your shopping basket, and proceed to check out. Before you take another step to the check out lane.  Look at the list of ingredients again. If the Argan Oil is not listed as one of the first five ingredients on the list, then it probably just contains a few drops of this coveted oil.  Yes, it does contain Argan oil, but probably not in the quantity that you are expecting. Most of the time, the listing of this ingredient is for marketing purposes. So, next time you go hair product shopping, pay close attention to the first five ingred...

HairChemistry: Good Alcohols vs. Bad Alcohols

Image
When you read through product ingredients, do you know what alcohol is good or bad?  I have always thought that alcohol in hair products have negative effects, however, I still use products that do contain them. Why? Because I guess I feel that the good outweighs the bad. I decided to do some reasearch as to what alcohols are good and which ones are bad.  The two differences between alcohols in hair products is that some are fatty alcohols, whereas others are drying alcohols.  The drying alcohols should be avoided because they can dry your hair making it brittle and causing it to break . Fatty alcohols help add moisture to the hair and also helps in conditioning the hair. The softness that you feel in your hair after using a product is usually due to the fatty alcohols that are present in the product. Here is a list to help you familiarize yourselves with the good and bad alcohols. Fatty alcohols Benzyl alcohol C30-50 Alcohols Cetearyl alcohol Cetyl ...

Protein and Moisture

As I was doing my research regarding Protein Sensitivity , I came across an article from The Science of Black Hair website.  I would like to share this with you because it contains some vital information that will benefit our hair health.  Also, if you are interested in buying the book: The Science of Black Hair; you can get it from Amazon or the website above. HairChemistry: Protein Sensitivity

Image
What is Protein Sensitivity? Protein Sensitivity is what happens when a person uses protein in their hair, and their hair appears to be dull, dry and brittle even though the protein treatment was suppose to make their hair soft.  This reaction to protein can appear after the person uses any products that contains protein. This sensitivity to protein can also make the hair more prone to breakage. Are you truly protein sensitive? Now, if you are experiencing the symptoms listed above, be very careful not to immediately think that your hair is protein sensitive.  Some of the protein sensitive-like symptoms you might be experiencing might be due to overloading on protein. Now, what is overloading on protein? Let say, you washed your hair, and applied a protein treatment, then after that you applied yet another protein conditioning.  Your hair might be overloaded with protein, causing it to feel straw-like.  On the other hand, let say no matter how much mois...

HairChemistry: pH Balance and Hair

Image
The first time I ever heard of pH Balance and Hair was while watching kimmaytube'sYouTube video Now, what is pH Balance? pH or " Potential of Hydrogen" is the process of measuring the acid or alkaline levels of any liquid.  The liquid can be water or cream-based. Acidic levels range from 0 to 6.9, while Alkaline levels range from 7.1 to 14.  Pure water is neutral; having a level of 7.0. To find out what the pH level of the water that I use to wash my hair was, I bought some pH test strips. I got mine (Macherey-Nagel brand) from Amazon , after searching many stores in my area. Why am I testing my water?  From my research, hard water can cause hair to become dull, dry, limp, and brittle. It also has the ability to make the hair more prone to breakage and tangles.  This is because of the high mineral content that is in the water. I wanted to find out if I have hard water.  When I tested, my water was about 7.5. Not bad....

Hair-inspiration: Grow, Hair, Grow!

Image
Black Hair can G-R-O-W.  However, different factors cause the growth to be minimal or even stop at a particular length.  My goal is to grow my hair to an healthy state.  If you notice, I did not mention any of the known Natural World hair growth measurements:   SL (Shoulder length), CBL (Collar Bone Length), BSL (Bra Strap Length), MBL (Mid Back Length), EL (Elbow Length), or the famous WL (Waist Length). An healthy state of hair growth to me is a growth that I am comfortable with.  My healthy state of hair growth is different from the next natural's healthy state of hair growth.  For me, this will the the growth level where maintenance of my hair will be managable. I know that if I am able to grow my hair down to my bum, I will have a hard time managing it.  That is just me. Different factors can affect hair growth, to learn more about Hair Growth and Maintenance, view the video below: Here are some ...
