What Are Dormant Hair Follicles?

 What Are Dormant Hair Follicles?

When hair follicles stop producing hair altogether, that hair follicle is now considered dormant, and future hair growth from that follicle is unlikely if not impossible.

If you have balding areas, those follicles might not yet be completely dormant.

Do not confuse hair that is in the resting phase of hair growth circle with dormant  hair.

How can hair become dormant?

Dormant hair follicles can occur from physical damage to the hair follicle, leading to it no longer being able to grow hair. Or, more commonly, hair follicles can be slowly miniaturized from exposure to a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone). It can also be caused by damage to scalp caused by accident, chemical burn, product burn.

How to know if your hair is dormant or in resting phase

Dormant hair follicles mean that the growth phase has probably shortened over the course of many cycles, and the hairs keep getting shorter, finer, and thinner.

If hair sheds during the exogen phase of hair growth and does not come back, that follicle has become dormant. This can cause hair to thin out gradually.
