How I Cleansed and Styled the Girls' Natural Hair in 2 Hours

Natural Hair Kids Wash Day Hair Care
After a weekend at the beach and swimming at the pool, it was time to give the girls' hair a bit of TLC. Before on our vacation, I had pack some items that we would need to do a quick cowash and moisturizing session after leaving any body of water.

While on vacation, here is how I cared for the girls hair. I stored all the details in this FREE app, Hair Journal App.

Now that we are home, it's time to clarify.

I was a bit short on time, so the plan was to do this all under 2 hours.  I started with Lil Sis.
  • Using the ShampooMatemy newest love! , I sectioned her hair into 4 parts and secured each with a butterfly clip.
Working one section at a time :
Next was a protein treatment to strengthen the hair
After this treatment, I did a moisturizing deep conditioning on her hair
While Lil Sis was under the dryer, I started shampooing Big Sis's hair. I followed up with the protein treatment and the moisturizing deep conditioning. By the time I was done, Lil Sis was ready to get out of the dryer, and I sat Big Sis under the dryer.

While Big Sis was under the dryer, I rinsed of Lil Sis's deep conditioner, and started with styling her hair.
  • Started by applying my oil mix to her hair
  • Applied SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave In Conditioner
  • Applied Eden Bodyworks Pudding Souffle
  • Put her hair in 4 sections using Snappee snap off hair ties
    • You can get your at http://snappee.com Use discount codes DISCOVERINGBOGO or DISCOVERINGSHIP
  • For each section, did 2 chunky twists.
  • Gather all twists in a design
By the time, I was done doing this, Big Sis was ready to come out of the dryer and I repeated the steps above for her too.

YEAH!!  Hair done under 2 hours... This style should last a week.

QOTD: How do I stop my baby's hair from tangling at the back?

With babies, as they grow, their hair texture and type will change.

Make sure that her hair is well moisturized. Keep her routine simple. Due to the fact that she sleeps on her back 90% of the time, it will be prone to knotting. Wash her hair with sulfate free shampoo or you can wash with conditioner. If you use conditioners to "co-wash", make sure to at least cleanse with shampoo once a month or every 2 weeks.

Moisturize her hair while damp. Apply some extra virgin olive oil or extra virgin coconut oil, then a light moisturizer. You can use your finger to softly detangle her hair or a soft brush.
As she grows, you can do twists in her hair to keep it stretched and prevent tangles.

Wash and Go for Natural Hair Kids

Wash and Go for Natural Hair Kids

I've always wanted to do wash and go on my girls' hair. Before I attempt to do this, I had to first work on learning all the trick and frustrations of doing this style. In May, I did a full month of wash and go and learnt so much in the process. Click here to watch the footage.
Wash and Go for Natural Hair Kids

Big Sis rarely has her hair out because of all the activities she does, however, since she is on summer break, I decided to attempt doing Wash and Go on her hair. She wore the style for 4 days and love EVERY moment of it.

Click here or watch her experience below:

After seeing her hair in a wash and go... Big Sis said... "I FEEL .... FREE!"
For those of you wondering if her hair tangled up, ... no, it did not. When it was time to re-wash, I saturated her hair with water and was able to easily detangle. FYI, her hair really tangles.

How to Care for TWA Natural Hair

What is TWA Natural Hair?
TWA is a natural hair term that means Teeny Weeny Afro.

Keep Your Hair Moisturized
It is important to focus on keeping your hair moisturized. You can moisturize your hair using different techniques. The most common method is by doing the LOC method. LOC means Liquid- Oil-Cream.  Click here or watch below to hear more about this technique and others:

After you moisturize your hair, it is important to seal in that moisture with either a thick butter like shea butter or an oil like castor oil or shea oil. You might also want to create a moisturizing spritz that you can use on-the-go or as a daily refresher. Click to see how to create a spritz.
Protecting your hair with a bonnet or scarf at night can also help keep the moisture in your hair longer.

Strengthen your Hair
Do protein treatments at least once a month. This can strengthen your hair and help reduce breakage. If you cannot find a protein treatment in your area, you can always make your own. If you use a strong protein treatment such as Aphogee 2 Steps, follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner to help soften the hair. Click here or watch below to see a quick and easy recipe:

Create a Regimen
Creating a regimen will help you a lot. Not only will it keep you organized in terms of caring for your hair, but it gives you a guideline on what your hair needs might be. How to create a regimen:

Styling Your TWA
Depending on the length of your TWA, you can do styles such as puffs and finger coils. Adding accessories like headbands and hair combs can make your TWA more girlish looking. Wash and go style is the most common TWA hairstyle. Adding gel and/or a curl defining product can help showcase any curls you naturally have. Here are some tips on doing wash and go:

Cowashing Kids Natural Hair featuring ShampooMate

Cowashing means Conditioner Washing. It helps with keeping the hair soft. We do this process when I feel that her hair just needs an extra boost of moisture and also cleansing. Usually, if she does not have a ton of product buildup, I would cowash instead of shampooing.
Information about ShampooMate can be found on http://shampoomate.com

Products used:
Eden Bodyworks All Natural Cleansing Cowash
Oil Mix (Extra Virgin Olive oil, Jojoba oil, Castor Oil, Vitamin E, Moringa Oil)
SheaMoisture Curl and Style Milk.

What To Do After You Big Chop

Moisturize Your Hair Often
The first thing to know is Natural hair is very prone to being dry, so you need to keep your hair moisturized to prevent breakage.

One way you can moisturize your hair is by layering your products. Doing the L.O.C method is such a way. This mean simply spritz your hair with water or a liquid leave in, then apply oil and then a moisturizing water based cream. It is important to seal in that moisturize with either a thick oil like castor oil or shea butter, especially if your hair has a thicker density. Deep conditioning your hair weekly also helps in retaining that moisture.

Other way you can moisturize your hair.

Once your hair is moisturize, incorporating a protein treatment at least once a month will help strengthen your hair. Keeping a Moisture-Protein balanced regimen is ideal for natural hair care.

Here is more information about creating a regimen:

Wondering what Deep Conditioning treatment is?

Deep conditioning is a moisture based treatment in which you apply a hair treatment (products usually come labeled as hair mask/masque or deep conditioner).
It is like a normal conditioner, but the way that you will know that it is a deep conditioner is that it will say leave on for over 5 minutes.

What is a Moisture-Protein Balanced Regimen?

Moisture-Protein Balance Regimen  is when you rotate between using a moisturizing hair treatment and a protein treatment. How I do this is if I deep condition my hair with a moisturizing conditioner (one that has no protein), then, I will moisturize my hair with a product that has protein in it, and vice versa.
