What To Do After Protective Styling Natural Hair

What to Do After Protective Styling Natural Hair

It's been 3 weeks since I installed my Havana Twists. If you had told me 3 weeks ago that I would keep them this long, I would say... NO! The last time I installed these types of twists was about 2 years ago and I only lasted 2 weeks. Click here to watch.

One thing I did differently this time was prepare the right type of moisturizing spray to keep my hair hydrated at all time. My spray consisted of 7 ounce water, 1 tsp of glycerin, my oil blend, 5 drops of tea tree oil and 1 capsule (emptied) MSM capsule 1000mg (sulfur).

Regarding the MSM and hair (Source Long Hair Care Forum) :
Sulfur speeds up the length of your hair growth cycle, by extending the anagen phase. When the anagen phase is sped up, so are the other phases, which makes your hair seem to shed faster than it would normally. The sulfur is allowing that follicle to return to the active growth stage. About 10-15% of your hair is in the telogen or shedding phase at an given time. Your hair won't thin because of sulfur use unless you are allergic, already thinning at a high rate, or neglecting your hair in other ways.

This spritz lasted the entire time. I moisturized as needed, depending on what I did during the day. Click here to watch.

What to Do After Protective Styling Natural Hair

After taking out the extensions, my hair was so soft, unlike the last time, when my ends were super dry and my hair was brittle. I was SHOCKED. I give credit to the glycerin in my mix for this effect and also consistency in my moisturizing process.

Moisturizing Natural Hair

Moisturizing Natural Hair

Here are the steps I took in cleansing my hair:
Although I did not have a lot of buildup, I still felt the need to totally clarify my hair since it has been a while since I cleansed it.

  • Used rinse out conditioner, Trader Joe's Tree Tea Tingle Conditioner to invigorate my scalp and soften my hair. The clarifying shampoo does not contain sulfates, however, it can feel a bit hard to the hair. This conditioner helps to soften the hair again.
After protective styling, you should always incorporate a protein treatment into your wash day. This is because it will strengthen your hair and help repair any damage done to your hair strands. I decided to try out a new product, Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor. After I had used this, I then read the ingredients (can't believe I forgot to do that prior to buying) and discovered it had Mineral Oil. Anywhoooo....

The direction said to use it 1/2 ounce and leave on for 2mins or 5 minutes for maximum repair. I did 5 minutes. The measurements did confuse me because I did not realize that 1/2 ounce is actually a palm full. Who comes up with these measurements anyways?! I did not use the full amount. Maybe that is why I did not feel the strong feeling the other naturalistas talked about. My hair did feel soft afterwards.

After rinsing, I applied SheaMoisture 10 in 1 Renewal System Hair Masque, a moisturizing deep conditioner. Left it in overnight and in the morning, did my LOCS method and twisted up my hair for the week.

Caring for Low Porosity Natural Hair

Caring for Low Porosity Natural Hair

According to NaturallyCurly.com:

[Low Porosity] Hair described as having low porosity is characterized by a very tightly bound cuticle layer, where the individual cuticle scales lie flat and overlap one another. Low porosity hair is often quite shiny, especially if it is a darker color. Overall this type of hair is considered to be quite healthy. If your hair repels water when you attempt to wet it, that is a good indication that it has low porosity. It can be quite difficult to process, because it resists penetration of the chemicals being used.

Here are things you can incorporate into your low porosity hair regimen:

Warm Water Rinse
Instead of doing a cool water rinse to close your cuticle after cleansing your hair, do a warm water rinse. Because with low porosity hair, your cuticle scales lie flat, you need to keep them open so that you can properly moisturize them.

Damp or Dry Moisturizing
Do not moisturize your hair when soaking wet. This is because the moisturizer will not penetrate well. Dry your hair complete or up to 80% dry before applying your moisturizer.

Dry Hair Deep Conditioning
It might seem strange to you deep conditioning your hair while it is dry, before washing it, however this totally makes sense. When low porosity hair is wet, it is filled with water and thereby not allowing the deep conditioner to effectively penetrate the strands. The hair appears might appear coated with the conditioner seating on top instead of penetrating.

Use Heat
Incorporating heat into your regimen in the form of steamers and using hooded dryers will help your products penetrate better. You can also use your body heat by covering your hair with a shower cap

Avoid Products that Close Cuticle
There are some products that will close the cuticles. One such product is Apple Cider vinegar. Also, aloe vera gel/juice can be an issue. Instead use products that open up your cuticles. Look for products that have more of an alkaline pH.

If you don't know your porosity, here is how to find out:

Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor Ingredients Change

Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor

Since going natural, my #1 go-to protein treatment has been Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner. This has worked well for the girls and I, however, I always wondered what the hype was all about the Aphogee Protein Treatments. Instead of taking a huge plunge into the world of heavy-duty protein treatments, like the Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment, I decided to try the lighter version, Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor.

WITHOUT READING THE INGREDIENT LIST....

I got the largest bottle, because you all know, we have a ton of hair in da house... minus THE MAN of course!

It was not until after I had used it that I noticed the ingredient list was different from what was posted on Sally's Beauty online or in numerous natural hair blogs. Unlike Aubrey Organics GPB which is all natural, this one had a lot of ingredients that I could not pronounce. The main one that stuck out to me

was the fifth ingredient, Mineral Oil.

Here is the OLD ingredient list:

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Behenamidopropylamine Behenatem Stearolkonium Chloride, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cocodimonium Hydrolyzed Hair Keratin, Hydrolzed Mucopolysac Charides, Sodium Coco Collagen Amino Acids, Wheat Germ Fatty Acids, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Arachidonic Acid, Squalane, Avocado Oil, Acetimide MEA, Panthenol, Wheat Germ Oil, Jojoba Oil, Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sulfur, Amodimethicone, Polyquaternium 10, Linoleamidopropyl PG Dimonium, Chloride Phosphate, Tallowtrimonium Chloride, Nonoxynol 10, Cocoyl Sarcosine, Sorbitol, Fragrance, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

Here is the NEW ingredient list (courtesy of ManeObjective.com)

Ingredient List: Water (Aqua,Eau), Glycerin, Stearalkonium Chloride, Cetyl Alcohol, Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum, Huile Minerale), Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Trimethylsiloxyamodimethicone, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Linoleamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans,Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Collagen Amino Acids, Squalane, Phytantriol, Petrolatum, Polysorbate 60, Amodimethicone, Cetrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-10, Trideceth-12, C11-15 Pareth-7, C12-16 Pareth-9, Arachidonic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Stearyl Alcohol,  Hydroxyethylcellulose, Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum), Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate

yeah,.. there is a LOT of changes.

Have you used this product before? Do you notice differences in the different products ingredients reaction to your hair?

Big Sis : Magnetic Roller Set Adventure

It was Spring Break, and it was raining outside... what do you do...? well, you let the kids have a "salon day" at the DiscoveringNatural Salon.

Big Sis started by washing her hair with SheaMoisture SuperFruit Complex 10 in 1 Renewal System Shampoo. Since we follow a protein-moisture balance regimen, after rinsing the shampoo, she did a 2 mins protein treatment with Aubrey Organic GPB conditioner. After that, she did a deep conditioner moisture rich treatment using SheaMoisture SuperFruit Complex 10 in 1 Renewal System Hair Masque.

For post wash, I helped moisturize her scalp with my oil mix and working in sections, applied SheaMoisture Curl and Style Milk and twisted her hair into about 10 chunky twists. We left it in until slightly damp.

To style the magnetic rollers, I sectioned her hair into 3 sections.

It took about 45 minutes to complete the install. I'm still working on learning how to install these properly. We used the Coils and Glory Whipped Shea Butter and my DIY Flaxseed gel.

Oh, yeah! Lil Sis joined in the fun by adding perm rods to the ends of her hair too.

Now it was time to do the waiting game, since I was not letting her sit under the hooded dryer. Maybe next time.

THE TAKE DOWN!!

The roots were not as smooth as we would like them to be, but we had a FUN time doing it!!
