The LOCO Method of Moisturizing

Image
Move over LOC method , here comes the LOCO method of moisturizing!! What is the LOCO method of Moisturizing? This method is quite similar to the LOCS (Liquid-Oil-Cream-Sealing *shea butter). The only difference is that instead of using  thick butter as a sealant, I use a thick Oil . For some people Shea Butter does not work well in sealing their hair. I decided to try the LOCO method after clarifying my hair . How is it done? First, I wet my hair using a mixture of water and Aloe Vera Juice ( Liquid) , then I applied my Oil mix, I followed up with my Creamy leave in conditioner, Giovanni Direct Leave In, and finally used some Castor Oil   to seal in the moisture. What I liked most about this method is that my hair was moisturized for the entire week!! Yes!! My twists were also not frizzy. When I untwisted the first round, my twist out was frizz free until I went all crazy with  the fluffing.. LOL! Here is the results of my twist out.   I went crazy with the unraveling

"Is My Hair Damaged?" Test

Image
Last week, I read a blog post on CurlyNikki that I feel will be beneficial to all naturals. In the post was a list of questions to use to determine if your hair is damaged. Take the test below and tell me your results: How Damaged Is Your Hair? To assess how damaged your hair is, answer the following questions: Do you have a loss of elasticity to your hair?  Curly and kinky hair should be able to stretch to about 50% of its length before breaking. If it can’t be stretched to this degree without breaking then it has lost some elasticity and tensile strength. Is your hair breaking?  This is related to loss of elasticity .  Minimal breakage is normal but patches of broken hairs signify more extensive damage. Does your hair have shine or sheen or does it look dull?  While lack of shine or sheen may be a characteristic of healthy hair of some curly hair types on healthy hair a tight cuticle layer reflects light. Is your hair dry and brittle?  Hair becomes brittle when it ha

Protein Treatment for Kids

Image
It's that time of the month.... no...not that one...LOL! It's time for Big Sis and Lil Sis's monthly Protein Treatment . Why do I do protein treatment on my girls' hair? Well, this treatment helps to strengthen their hair and restore elasticity and shine. Normally, I use the Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner , however, today, I ran out of this product, so...to the kitchen we went to mix up our child-friendly DIY Protein Treatment. Here is the recipe: 1/2 cup of Mayonnaise ( strengthens hair) 1/4 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil ( anti-inflammatory, emollient, rich in fatty acids) 1 banana ( soften hair, improves elasticity, strengthens, promote shine) 1 tablespoon Raw Honey (humectant , smoothens cuticles) I saturated the girls' hair with this liquefied mixture, then wrapped their hair with saran wrap. Why saran wrap?   I wanted to trap as much heat as I can. I kept their hair wrapped up for 30 mins. When time was up, I rinsed their hair and shampooed tw

Transitioning Your Child's Hair to Natural

Image
By DiscoveringNatural So, your child's hair is currently texturized or relaxed and you are wondering how do you stop putting chemicals in your child's hair and make their hair completely natural. First thing, know that you are not alone. Let me share a little bit about myself and my older daughter, known as Big Sis on our YouTube channel, DiscoveringNatural . When Big Sis was 4 years old, I got to a point of frustration with her natural hair. At that time, I was blind to the beauty of natural hair. Maybe I was sleep deprive due to having a newborn, Lil Sis , or maybe it was the pain I felt when I saw her cry when I did her hair. I decided to listen to "friends" who advised me that the best thing to do was to texturize her hair. It will make her hair easier to manage. Everyone is doing it. They said. And, without doing my research, I listened and went ahead. Her hair was pretty... at first... Cornrow out (1 month texturized hair (4 years old Big Sis

I have a Confession!

Image
I cannot go more than one week without washing my hair! I read on different blogs and natural hair forum how some people can do a protective style for more than a week. That was not me... until now. For the past month, I have been training my hair to not get washed weekly. What was the results? Well, by the 10th day, my scalp started itching me BADLY. I oiled my scalp to subdue it and by day 12, it stopped... and I push on to day 14. Here is what my hair looked like on day 12.. it was frizz-city, and I had to handle it by doing this:   Reaction to my "new" look Click here to watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d4yDBh0IgU The next 2 weeks round was actually not too bad, on day 10th, no itchiness. # ThanktheLord However, despite regular moisturizing and scalp oiling, my scalp was flaking, and my hair felt grimy! I did not like it. My conclusion:   For some people like me, I have to wash my hair weekly. My scalp thanks me for this. I cannot rememb

How to Start Transitioning to Natural Hair

Image
By DiscoveringNatural Transitioning to Natural Hair is a process of letting your new growth (natural hair) grow with your relaxed ends. Let's start from the very beginning... When it comes to knowing how to start transitioning to natural hair, you have to have a starting point. The starting point is you having relaxed hair and wondering how to convert that relaxed, chemically treated hair back to its natural state.  Speaking from experience, when I ventured into the great unknown which was natural hair, I did not know what laid ahead for me. I knew that I did not want to cut off all my relaxed hair just 8 weeks after my last relaxer. I also knew that I wanted to learn more about the new world. You would think that it would be easy for me since I just got done transitioning my daughter for a year and my youngest daughter was always natural. But there is a difference when it comes to the care of your own hair . Step 1: Have a Plan Having a plan as to how I wanted to be
